Private and Group Health Insurance Coverage

Health Insurance Coverage
Health insurance provides money to pay medical bills incurred as a result of illness. Situations covered by Health insurance are described in the Health insurance policy, the policy is a legal contract, and the cost of the contract is called the premium. Health insurance, therefore, can be defined as a contract that provides money to cover all or a portion of the cost of medically necessary care.
Health insurance differs from other types of insurance in one important area: while the individual is almost always responsible for providing life, car, and liability insurance, health insurance is often provided to the individual as an employment benefit. In addition, the state and federal government are also involved in providing health insurance for certain populations: people over sixty-five years old, individuals receiving public assistance, and individuals with certain disabilities such as blindness and end-stage renal disease. Currently, employers or government programs provide most health insurance coverage.
Purpose of Health Insurance:
Monetary consequences of health risk and, by increasing access to care, make possible some improvement of the threats to health which can be helped directly by the Health insurance. This is the major two reasons why greater part of Americans who are not at all eligible for voluntary public insurance arrange seek for insurance coverage for there own purpose as well as for their dependents.
The study investigates the extent of risk pooling in private health insurance markets in the United States. At present, such markets are subject to hodgepodge of state and federal regulations, with rules, mandates, and subsidies ebbing and flowing at a moderately rapid rate. It is the present unsettled state of these markets that provides the policy motivation for questions about performance.
Despite some significant erosion, the employment based mechanism is currently by far the most common why of furnishing private health insurance to consumers in the United States. The performance of the employment based market is increasingly criticized, from both the left and the right, as deficient and inadequate. This study will suggest ways to improve public policy and private behavior.
The policy trade-off is between group health insurance, provided through the employment setting and non-group health insurance, marketed and purchased in the same way as other consumer insurances, such as homeowner’s or auto insurance.
Three Different Markets
Private health insurance in the United States is sold in three different markets with different economic structures. The smallest market is that for non-group or individual health insurance, a market much like the setting in which almost all American consumers buys their fire, auto, theft or life insurance. While some of this non-group health insurance supplements group insurance, there is a portion of the population, estimated to be about seven percent of those with private insurance that obtains its primary health insurance in this setting. In contract, group health insurance furnishes coverage for the majority of the population and is overwhelmingly based on employment related groups. Practices and performance differ somewhat between small group and all other group health insurance.
Risk Sharing and Voluntary Markets:
Basic economics teaches that unregulated competitive markets will inevitably lead to prices for any purchased product that are equal or nearly so to the cost of producing or financing that product. When insured’s vary in the expected cost of their health insurance benefits, even under a uniform, single insurance policy, the tendency in competitive markets is for premiums to reflect those cost differences - for premiums to be based on risk. Here risk is defined as a measure of expected insurance benefits. In such cases, insurance still very much pools risk, but the risk it pools is the risk of unexpected things: which individuals, among a set of apparently similar insured’s, will actually get sick and use care. It is not the variation in loss probability, which is assumed to be already known.
Conclusion:
The most important gap in risk pooling is the incompleteness or absence of insurance coverage, risk of chronic and costly conditions and failure to pool risk associated with age, gender, or location may not always be regarded as seriously undesirable on equity grounds.

The First Step in Finding Health Insurance
January 31st, 2009 Filed Under Medical Insurance
Before You Look for Health Insurance
Shopping around for medical insurance can be a confusing business. You need to keep your wits about you and keep track of the benefits and costs of each policy and each type of policy. Too often we tend to look at the price first and the rest of the policy becomes a blur of fine print. And we’re off to check the next policy.
Slow down. There some important things you should do before you start chasing around to get a policy. Doing these few things will make the whole process simpler and clearer - and you’re much more likely to make a good decision.
You need to carefully consider your situation. Think about these questions and note your answers:
What’s the general state of your health?
How old are you?
Do you have any serious medical problems currently or in your medical history?
Do you have any history of recurring or on-going medical needs?
Do you use tobacco? How much?
Do you drink? How much?
Are you over- or under-weight for your height, body-type and age?
Is your job hazardous?
Do you participate in any activities or sports that could affect your health?
Now this may be unpleasant but if there’s any chance an insurance company could discover a history of drug or alcohol abuse or sexual behavior that might put you in a high risk group, you may want to be direct and upfront about it - especially if it’s in the past. Having a claim denied later because you had failed to disclose medical information to the insurance company would be far more upsetting - and very expensive. The same goes for any significant medical condition. Insurance companies are in it to make a profit - at least most of them are. Paying large claims isn’t their favorite activity, so they often do investigate.
If you’re seeking a family policy you’ll need to make the same analysis for everyone and consider carefully what kind of coverage you want.
Do you need dental, orthodontic, pregnancy, mental health, and/or drug coverage? Do you need long-term care coverage, either inpatient or in a nursing facility? Assisted living coverage? What about traveler’s or international coverage?
If there’s a possibility that you may require - or want - in-home care as opposed to a residential nursing or assisted living facility, be sure that coverage is included and be sure you understand exactly what you can expect to receive.
Think about deductibles and what you could afford pay to reduce your insurance costs. But be very careful here, because medical expenses tend to pile up quickly and reach nearly insane levels for complex treatments or inpatient stays. Many drugs in common use are ridiculously over-priced and depending on the specifics of your insurance you may not be able to use the least expensive sources.
If you will end up with multiple sources of coverage, be clear about how they fit together and what the rules are about overlapping or combined benefits.
Once you are clear on your current situation, your (and other family member’s) medical history, and your projected needs, you can begin looking in a organized way with a better sense of where you’re going and what will actually meet your needs. This may seem like a tedious process, but it will serve you well in finding appropriate and affordable health insurance and making sure your health care needs can be met by the medical insurance you choose.
Take some time to work through these questions. Write down your answers. Make a chart with your desired coverages and any special conditions the policy must meet. As you look at health insurance policies, note the rules, exclusions, information about pre-existing conditions, any limitations, the dollar amounts covered and especially any deductibles.
Don’t try to do too much at once. If you hurry, it’ll become confusing and tiring. You may hate it (I know I do), but you really do need to read all that fine print and understand it. That’s not a task to rush through. You might as well face up to it, because it’s a lot better to do it BEFORE you need medical services than after you get a bill for the uncovered portion that sends you into shock.
So is it an impossible job to find health insurance that works for you? Not at all. There’s a world of resources on the internet to help you find the policy you need. Just be sure to do your homework first.

Is Your Health Insurance Policy Priced Right?
January 31st, 2009 Filed Under Medical Insurance
A High Insurance Premium Does Not Guarantee Premium Insurance Coverage
There are many ways you can save on the cost of your health insurance but first you have to take into account the coverge you want and if you are going to be taking individual coverage or whether you are taking coverage for the whole family.
The cost of health insurance can vary greatly depending on the amount of coverage you need, if you were to take all the options available in private health insurance then the premium would be astronomical and something which very few people could afford to do. Fortunately however, you can get good coverage for a decent premium by shopping around and following these tips.
Always check the policy because it might include things which you don’t need, for instance, if you are a single man and a policy includes costs for pregnancy then this obviously won’t be needed. While this might seem like common sense, it is surprising how many people don’t look into what is in the policy they are buying. So always look into the different packages and options that are available.
If you are considering the lowest cost health insurance then look into purchasing a policy that only covers major illnesses. Limited coverage is one of the cheapest ways to buy insurance but take into account that minor illnesses and accidents will not be covered.
You can keep the cost of the premium down if you offer to pay a higher deductable. All policies will require that you pay something towards the cost of treatment before the insurance will kick in, this can start from something as low as 10 dollars. You could offer to share a percentage of the cost which will also bring the premium down.
Just remember, the sales man who sells you insurance has a vested interest in makiing sure you pay the highest premium possible. He will sell you whatever he thinks he can get away with. It is up to you, the consumer, to be aware of what features you are buying. The best way to do that…ask, ask and ask some more.

Finding An Affordable Health Insurance Provider
January 31st, 2009 Filed Under Medical Insurance
Finding An Affordable Health Insurance Provider
Are you looking for an affordable health insurance provider? Start by asking yourself a few questions that should get you started on the right track.
Are you a student?
Are you currently employed? If so, does your employer have health insurance available? If your work does provide health insurance, but you are a new employeee and are going through your waiting period, are you looking for a temporary health insurance plan?
Are you looking for individual insurance or do you need a family plan?
There are a lot of intangibles involved when you are trying to find an affordable medical insurance policy. These are similar questions that you’ll be asked by an agent when you go to get a quote. They’ll need to be able to narrow down what you’re looking for in order to provide you with the most helpful information and the proper coverage.
Other questions will be "do you have any current illnesses that we should be aware of?" They will have a long list of selections to choose from. Make certain that you are completely honest. Just because you may have a medical condition, such as diabetes, does not automatically disqualify you. The insurance Underwriter will likely review your application and have you either take a physical or at least a few more tests before they make a final decision.
There will be several factors involved in finding an affordable health insurance provider and many questions will be asked of you once you do find something that fits your needs. Patience, persistance and honesty will prevail in your search. I recommend that you start getting free life insurance quotes right away so you can begin comparing plans and rates.
Good luck.

Which Health Insurance Is Right For You?
January 31st, 2009 Filed Under Medical Insurance
Which Health Insurance Is Right For You?
How do you choose the best health insurance policy? The answer really depends on your situation in life. If you are someone who is young and single you will have far different needs than someone who is older and who has a family depending on the health insurance. If you are a senior citizen, your insurance needs may be all together different. While you are shopping for health insurance companies, plans and ploicies, here are some points you may need to consider.
Structure: HMO, PPO, or POS?
One of the first choices you may need to make is which structure your health insurance policy will have. The three most common structures are HMOs, PPOs, and POSs.
An HMO, or health maintenance organization, is probably the most affordable option. However, you will have many limitations with an HMO as to which doctors you can visit, and there is often a lot of paperwork you must go through in order to obtain certain medical procedures or get a visit with a specialist. In an HMO, your doctor is paid a set fee each month for each patient under his care, regardless of whether or not a particular patient receives care that month. You are required to visit doctors who are in the HMO.
With a point-of-service structure, or POS, your insurance provider only pays when you receive services. You have fewer limitations as to the doctors you can see, but you may be required to pay a portion of the cost each time you receive care. You will have slightly more flexibility if you need specialist care under a POS plan.
A PPO, or preferred-provider-organization, is like a combination of the two previous policies. Like an HMO, you are going to be better off if you choose a physician that is part of your network. With a PPO, your insurance will pay more for your care if the provider is in the network. However, unlike an HMO, you can choose to go to a doctor who is out of the network, you will just have to pay more out of pocket to do so. You will also have a deductible and co-pays with this type of insurance.
Deductible Vs. Premium
The deductible, or the amount you must pay out of pocket before your insurance will kick in, directly affects the amount you pay for your premium. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium will be. However, finding the right balance between the two is not always easy.
If you are going to be using your insurance regularly, such as if someone in your home has a pre-existing medical condition or if you have children who need regular checkups, you may want to pay a little more for your insurance premium in order to have a lower deductible. However, if your insurance is to be used for potential major health problems that you might face someday, but right now you are relatively healthy, a higher deductible in return for a lower premium may be more beneficial.
Look at Prescription Drug Coverage
Not all insurance policies have prescription drug coverage. The best health insurance policies will cover your prescriptions. If the policy does not cover prescriptions, find out if it offers a discount plan you can use towards drug expenses.
Look at Lifetime Maximum Benefits
Many insurance products will put a cap on the amount you can receive in benefits. This is called a maximum lifetime benefit. These will apply to individual treatments, such as cancer, mental illness, or organ transplants. If the insurance has very low caps, such as $100,000, you need to find something else. Medical expenses add up quickly, and you do not want to be paying for coverage that is not going to be sufficient if you have a severe medical problem in the future.
Choosing health insurance is never easy. Be sure that you work with a qualified agent who can answer all of your questions. Pose various scenarios to see how the insurance would cover situations that could occur in your future. This will help you choose the best health insurance for your medical needs.
